GR Episode Playlist and Bonus Material

Our Grand Rapids’ episode received a lot of positive response and inspired Jef Leppard to upload a out of this world awesome video of Robert S.  Be looking for another GR themed podcast in the future.  In the meantime, enjoy these Grand Rapids related links and other bonus materials (after the jump).  Let’s start with the tracklist:

Quintron- A Place Unknown

J-Live- Charmed Life

Me and Dem Guys- Black Cloud

The Jades- We Got Something Going

The Soulbenders- 7 and 7 Is (Love cover)

The Rotary Connection- Rapid Transit/ Turn Me On/ Pink Noise

FENTON AND WEST GRAND RAPIDS GARAGE ROCK

Check out Grand Rapids Rocks for all kinds of information on the Fenton label including the bands we played on the show as well as other West Michigan garage rock bands.

I just found this little bit of very sad information.  It appears the Sparta Theater where many Fenton records and the vocals for the first Rotary Connection record were recorded was torn down over a decade ago.  According to a comment posted under this interesting article a whole lot of records were found in the basement when it was torn down.  Oh to be there before the wrecking ball…

My friend David Sampson alerted me to the fact that the Soul Benders song “7 and 7 is” is a cover of a Love song.  Thanks David!  Below is a video Aris Hampers posted for the song featuring some old film of the band.  Check out his other videos for more photos and footage of the Soul Benders.

ROTARY CONNECTION

Charles Stepney, what didn’t he do?

Minnie Riperton’s High Notes (don’t bother checking this out Beezy)

Minnie Riperton- Lovin’ You

Minnie Riperton’s most famous song which she wrote with her husband Richard Rudolph about her daughter Maya RudolphYes, that Maya Rudolph. [1] [2]

THE TMGS- THE HATCH

It sells for a lot of money.

Unless you aren’t obsessed with OG copies.

THE GREAT DARYL NATHAN

Daryl Nathan- Fourth of July

BEAUTIFUL WORLD- A GREAT DARYL NATHAN DOCUMENTARY PART 1 (Definitely on the laughing at not laughing with tip, but interesting.)

ROBERT S

FOX (aka Robert S) “I Sell Rock” 1993

This video is the kind of Grand Rapids gold Beezy and I could only hope would be unearthed.  Jeeps.  Crack. Grand Rapids place and people.  It’s evidence that the trappings of Golden Age Hip Hop did not elude GR and maybe it was more with the times than we know.

We split our feeling about the song (I like the “Under Pressure” sample even though by 1993 it was pretty much ruined by Vanilla Ice), but there is no question that the video should be seen by anyone interested in Grand Rapids, music or early 90’s Hip Hop in general.

Jef has promised more videos are on the way.  Be watching his Facebook page or check back here.  I can’t wait!!

C.C. BAND

I posted this record to my blog awhile back.  I will probably play the other side in a future show, but you can hear it here as well.

Let us know if you have any Grand Rapids music that needs to be heard or if you have any insights into the stuff we have played.  Even though we know some stuff we are by no means experts.

Catch you all on Thursday!

This may be on the unimpressive side after “I Sell Rock” but it might be entertaining to anyone who liked the “Out Of Town” track.
It’s me, Rob S. and Daryl on GRTV late at night, doing a little promoting for the (soon to be doomed) album.
This part is the two of them doing Out Of Town live. Well Sort of. Rob freestyles it off into something totally different.

Don’t know the backstory to this other one. It’s just something that’s been in my collection for a long, long time. Some local dudes with drum machines, keyboards and stuff make a very tongue-in-cheek track in homage to the 1960s Batman. Funny and catchy, nicely edited video.

Sorry– new URL for the second item. Had to re-up it because of some awful noise in the audio encode of the 1st version…
