The first Black Eyes LP on Dischord is a unstoppably dense slab of art-punk wax. Even the vinyl is serious: it’s as thick as a dinner plate. After I played it a few times in my apartment I still wasn’t hooked. My roomate Phil was, however, and after listening a few more times with him it’s like the sky lit up and I have been evangelical for the album ever since.
Unfortunately they broke up while touring 2 months before their second LP “Cough” was released. They left the world with some of the most emotionally intense and sonically electrifying music I have yet to hear. You may not give two shits about Black Eyes but I recently found a video (alas only a mildly interesting one) of them recording the first album and am sharing it with you as well as some show footage and a track from that devastating self-titled gem they dropped on us back in 2003.
