Episode #40 – Grand Rapids Feat. Tom Shannon

Beezy & Local DJ paid a visit to Tom Shannon to discuss Grand Rapids music, and we got more than we bargained for. Tom’s collection is absolutely insane, and his knowledge of Grand Rapids music is insanier. Tom dropped serious knowledge of the Grand Rapids funk, blues, and soul scene that he has been collecting for years. This episode is a must listen.

The file is pretty large to preserve the integrity of the music that was played. We didn’t want to compress it down more than we had to.

This should really just become the Tom Shannon Show – or at least be a regular segment.

    So good!

Hey dudes, great site!!! My name is Aaron Anderson and I’m from (and currently living in) Grand Rapids. Anyway, I’m a collector of records, and, in particular, those from West Michigan so it was really great to stumble across your site this evening. It’s always great to see folks out in the world who share the interest!! Anyway, if any of you feel like getting in touch, I’d love to hear from you (I have some great local records!)

    My email address is aaronda45@gmail.com

    Thanks so much!

  4. Aaron Anderson says:

Peter Spice was definitely a pseudonym of Palmer James. There’s a pseudonym listed on the Spot & The Blotters 45 as well, but I can’t recall what it is at present. We play the 45 pretty much every month at the Ann Arbor Soul Club. We play the flip though. 🙂

  5. Tom Shannon says:

Hi Aaron, Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I have the Blotters 45 too where Palmer’s listed as PJ Spice, but on the Mickey & Ernie 45 it says Peter Spice (& Joe Pringle!) He was big into pseudonyms, even recycling the name People’s Choice for a later release by a younger band called The Topics. Please tell me you can make it to my next DJ night called Seven Day Weekend on Sat Aug 27/9pm at the Tip Top Deluxe! I sent you a Facebook invite. Matt & Beezy are coming!
